Finally in several instances, more than one colony of

same plate culture was examined for type. The results confirm

the already established fact that usually all the meningococci

in the same nasopharynx are of the same type.

Inconclusion, the results of the swabbing of a number of

the inmates of the Victoria Gaol show: Firstly, that a number

(24.61 per cent) of carriers of organima indistingui shable from

meningococoi have been found. Secondly, that these carriers

harbour practically all types of the menángoooodus. Thirdly,

that three of the carriers harbour organisms indistinguishable

from the types of those found in the epidemio. One of these

intantes carries almost a pure culture of one of the types

prevalent in the epidemio. Fourthly, that thepercentage of

carriers in gaol is higher than that demonstrated by Dra, Macfar-

lane and Karle among the actual contacts with the patients during

the epidemio. Finally, among the six hundred or more prisoners,

no oase of spidemic meningitis has developed.

5.

The epidemiologioni conclusions from the foregoing find-

ings are as follows:

■. The pre-epidemic factors. Sporadic oneen of meningitis

have occurred. Carriers of meningoooooi have also been found in

the gaol population, in sense who have been limtes for over a

year. On the other hand, the port is a great comeroiul centre

and a oærrier or a patient may have been "imported". In other

event, the so-irge of infeavion may have been a healthy carrier

or a patient, native or foreign.

An excessively dry but extremely cold winter prevailed.

at the mma time there was an extraordinary number of cases of

pharyngitis and bronchial affections and influenza.

These are favourable conditions in view of previous

experience for development of cases of apidonio meningitis but

these factors do not explain the great spread of the disease
